ACO Green City: Water as a Driver for Climate-Resilient City Centres

From Excess Water to Valuable Water

Climate change is presenting cities with major challenges. Intense rainfall events are causing urban flooding, while extended periods of drought and heat are leading to drying vegetation and a less liveable public environment. For municipalities, urban planners, and civil engineering professionals, this creates a new challenge: how can we develop city centres that can withstand more extreme weather while remaining attractive places for residents and visitors?

According to ACO, the answer lies in a fundamentally different approach to water management. Rainwater should no longer be viewed as a problem that needs to be drained away as quickly as possible, but as a valuable resource that can be retained, stored, and reused locally. This creates an essential foundation for climate adaptation, urban greening, and future-proof living environments.

ACO Green City: A healthy living environment, ready for the future!

This vision comes together in the ACO Green City concept. Within this integrated system, rainwater management and urban greenery are directly connected. Rainwater falling on roofs, streets, and public squares is not discharged into the sewer system, but instead collected, filtered, and stored for use by trees, plants, and other green infrastructure.

The result is an intelligent water cycle in which retention, infiltration, conveyance, and reuse are continuously aligned. The system helps prevent flooding, supports healthy tree growth, reduces urban heat stress, and enhances biodiversity. At the same time, it restores the natural water cycle as much as possible, making urban areas more resilient to the impacts of climate change.

From Supplier to Strategic Partner

Urban development is increasingly moving from linear to circular systems, from grey to blue-green infrastructure, and from standalone applications to integrated solutions. Within this transition, ACO positions itself as more than just a product supplier. Rather than simply providing drainage products, ACO actively contributes to the design of complete water management systems that support climate resilience at city scale.

By collaborating with municipalities, urban planners, landscape architects, and engineers, ACO develops future-oriented concepts in which water serves as a connecting element. Drawing on international expertise and practical experience, this knowledge can be translated into feasible and effective solutions for the Dutch public realm.

The cities of tomorrow will not only be defined by their buildings, but increasingly by the way water flows through them. With ACO Green City, ACO is taking an important step in that direction: moving from drainage to integrated water management, and from supplier to strategic infrastructure partner.
